Wednesday morning, it was announced that Canadian songstress and Cape Breton native Rita MacNeil passed away at 68 years of age from complications in surgery. She was a woman with a powerful and unique voice that touched people from coast to coast to coast, singing songs about her Maritime home that struck a chord with people around the country. She was a regular on our TV sets and stages in our community. Much like Stompin’ Tom Connors who also passed away recently, she was a uniquely Canadian performer who believed in this country and the talent within. She will be missed by many.
